Studying abroad in Florence, Italy, is an incredible opportunity, a dream come true for many. The cobblestone streets, the art, the food—it’s like living in a painting. But what no one really talks about is the overwhelming feeling that can wash over you in this beautiful city. It’s not always sunshine and gelato; sometimes, it’s hard to navigate the hustle and bustle of a new country, culture, and life. And that’s okay.
In the beginning, you might find yourself lost in this whirlwind of excitement and expectation. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that everything should feel perfect, that every moment should be Instagram-worthy, or that you should always feel grateful and energized. But sometimes, you don’t. You might feel a little homesick or disconnected, or maybe the newness of everything starts to weigh on you. That’s normal, and it’s okay.
What’s important is to remind yourself that it’s okay not to be okay. Everyone experiences moments of doubt or anxiety, even in the most beautiful places. Studying abroad is a huge adjustment, and you’re allowed to feel all the emotions that come with it.
So, what do you do when that feeling of overwhelm creeps in?

Enjoy the views from walks.
Maintain a schedule.
When everything else feels a bit overwhelming, routine can be your compass. Having some structure in your day might help create a sense of normalcy, but it doesn’t have to be strict. Start small, such as having a set breakfast, waking up at the same time, or going for a morning stroll through the city. You can get grounded by doing something as easy as making your bed or getting your favorite cup of coffee at a nearby café. In addition to keeping you occupied, routine also helps you feel in control, which can lessen worry.

Stay occupied.
When you have too much time to overthink, it’s easy to go into a downward spiral. Sometimes moving is the best course of action when overwhelm strikes. Staying busy helps you change your attention from your emotions to what’s going on around you, whether that’s studying hard, joining a club, exploring the local markets, or meeting new people. Additionally, as you venture out and fully embrace this new life, you’ll start to appreciate the beauty in the little things, such as a pleasant exchange with a local or a piece of unexpected street art.

Take advantage of SAI day trips
Take it easy on yourself.
Don’t be hard on yourself if you’re feeling strange. Everybody’s experience studying abroad is different, and it’s not always easy. Even though you are in a fantastic environment, not every day has to be flawless. It’s acceptable to experience terrible days, miss home, or feel overburdened by everything that could be going on. How you handle it is all that matters. Treat yourself with kindness and keep in mind that this emotion will pass.
I had no idea how much time I would need to give myself to get used to Florence when I first got there. I discovered that it’s all a part of the process, even though there were days when I felt uncomfortable. Through this experience, I’m still learning more about this city and about myself. You will emerge from the overload with a greater respect for the adventure because it doesn’t continue forever.
There will be both highs and lows along the crazy journey that is studying overseas. So, keep in mind that it’s acceptable to not feel okay. Maintain your schedule, stay occupied, and allow yourself the space to experience the emotions you require. And know that when you’re ready to completely enjoy your study abroad city once more, it will be there, as stunning as ever.
