Program Overview
The Year 2 specialization program in Accessory Design and Technology allows students to progress in the fashion field and is structured to give students a mature understanding of Italian fashion culture as well as the technical skills needed to become professionals within the field of accessory design and production. The Year 2 specialization includes a block set of courses that build on the foundational year in Fashion Design, Merchandising, and Media (Year 1), however, students can choose to enroll directly into Year 2 if they meet certain prerequisites (see Prerequisites below).
Program Objectives
The Year 2 specialization in Accessory Design and Technology will broaden students’ knowledge of accessory construction techniques and creative design, while offering a rigorous focus on direct experience and experiential learning. Students will gain design competency from the creation and interpretation of a creative concept into an effective accessory collection and gain competitive skills in prototyping handbags, hats, and footwear with attention to superb fit and quality-driven production and merchandising.
The academic year program will hone skills and techniques in accessory decoration and finishing techniques, handbag and footwear construction techniques, fashion styling and accessory line development, and portfolio development, with a focus on community engagement and experiential learning within FLY (Fashion Loves You), the school’s student-run boutique, which is open to the public. FLY is one of the school’s unique CEMI (Community Engagement Member Institutions), which allows students to directly apply skills and knowledge to real-life situations. FLY is open to the local community, and showcases a luxury vintage collection, local, emerging designers, and a student-produced brand. Students are mentored throughout the program by accomplished faculty that directly represent the fashion industry.
Career Opportunities
The program focuses on both production and individualized skills necessary to find gainful employment in a wide variety of positions in the fashion industry, such as senior designers in charge of the design and production phases of accessory collections for diverse markets.
Duration and Certification
Students complete two consecutive terms for a full academic year. Students who complete the full academic year will earn a certificate in Accessory Design and Technology with the exception of students who enroll in the Direct Access Track (see Prerequisites, below), who will instead receive an official letter from Florence University of the Arts confirming their completion of the program, along with a transcript. All students receive undergraduate course credit and a US transcript issued by the University of South Florida upon successful completion.
