From Student to Professional: How Study Abroad sparked my career journey

Studying abroad was one of the best decisions I made during my college years. When I started my research, SAI’s program in Florence checked all the boxes for me, making it the easiest choice of my college career. My semester in Florence, Italy, didn’t just fuel my love for travel and culture, it also ended up shaping my career. I never expected that my time at Florence University of the Arts through SAI would lead me to my first full-time job, but here I am. Here are the key takeaways from my journey:

Studying Abroad Changed Everything:

My semester in Florence, where I studied fashion and wine, was a game changer. Classes were engaging and interesting, allowing me to learn about subjects that are not taught in the US in ways that are not utilized in the US. Walking tours, cooking classes and museum days created my daily life in the renaissance streets. Walking the Narrow side streets, attending Fiorentina matches and befriending locals is what sparked a deep love for Italian culture and travel that still impacts my life today.

From Student to Ambassador:

After returning home, I took on the role of student ambassador for SAI Programs, working alongside South Carolinas education abroad office and the academic relations team with SAI sharing my experience and encouraging others to study abroad. From UofSC abroad fairs and tabling at HRSM specific events to taking part in alumni panels where I got to share my experiences as a SAI student; it felt so rewarding to help others see how life-changing this experience could be.

Interning with SAI Programs:

My time as an ambassador led to an internship with SAI, working alongside the academic relations team, where I learned how study abroad programs work behind the scenes—everything from student engagement to program development. It was hands-on experience that opened my eyes to international education.

Turning My Internship Into a Job:

When my internship wrapped up, I was offered a full-time position with the academic relations team. It was an easy choice to accept, knowing I could help students have the same life-changing experience I had.

My Advice: Just Go For It:

If you’re thinking about studying abroad, my advice is simple—do it. You never know how it might shape you, both personally and professionally. It might just lead to opportunities you never expected.
