Coming to Florence I had concerns about feeling at home in the city and finding a place within the beautiful artisanal community. Joining the International Service Certificate program truly completed my semester abroad. I knew I wanted to give back to the community for the short time I was here and found an unconventional but awesome way to do so through this program. I was connected with a local bookshop called Il Torchio that has existed since 1980. The shop is full of charm, history, and authentic Italian products. Bookbinding is a Florentine tradition; Il Torchio makes and sells artisanal leather and hand-marbled paper books. I helped the owner, Erin, work on the social media accounts, update the website, and even worked on a few shop items! I found a local guide, mentor, and friend in Erin.
Other than participating in the International Service or Global Leadership Certificate programs when studying abroad with SAI, I cannot recommend signing up for the Viva Experiences enough! These are activities and experiences set up by the program that students can sign up and attend for free. They range from cooking classes to the Italian Opera to bookbinding classes. I made so many friendships and memories from attending these events and experienced things I never would have thought.
Engaging in the community here in Florence will never lead you astray. The people here are so kind, cheerful, and helpful especially if you show interest in their culture or story. Because of the opportunities I took to connect with local Florentines and understand their way of life, Florence truly feels like my home.
