Tell us why you chose to study abroad.
As a part of the fashion design curriculum at WMU we are required to study abroad in a couple different places, I chose Italy because I come from a very big Italian family. My grandparents were from Sicily. I want nothing more than to explore the Italian culture and learn more about my family’s heritage.

Tell us about your school, major, interests, clubs (you in a nutshell).
I am a senior at WMU studying fashion design. I am always sewing, from school to personal projects. I like to stay active, a couple times a week. I also love to cook, I like to try new things and keep myself balanced and healthy. When I am not at school I love to be with my friends and family. I’m a pretty outgoing and adventurous person and love meeting new people and seeing new places.

What are you most excited about re. studying abroad?
It has been my dream for a really long time to travel to Europe. Italy is one of the many places I have wanted to see. There are so many foods I want to try, and places I want to see. Hopefully this trip will be the first trip in a lifetime full of travel.

What are you most nervous about re. studying abroad?
I have lived in New York for a summer, but this will be the farthest I have ever been from home. It is a whole new culture to experience, and it’s going to be a big culture shock.

What are three goals that you would like to achieve/accomplish while abroad?
First, I would like to build more skill in pattern making and apparel construction. I will be taking a draping and pattern making class while I am in Florence and I would like to learn as much as I can before I graduate in the spring.

Second, I would like to become proficient in Italian. I am in the process of learning the basics before I leave and I would like to work on my skills through immersion.

Third, I would like to learn more about my heritage and the Italian culture. I would like to experience the food and wine. See local art, visit the museums and observe architecture. I want to experience all Florence has to offer.
