My Heart Belongs to the Sea: MADE Institute, Sicily

The Sicilian Coast

When I listen close enough, sometimes I hear a call drifting through the wind. This voice always leads me to the ocean.

As an artist, I would find comfort staring out at the sea before me, my canvas blank and my brush dipping into blue-green paint. Being able to travel to new places, to new seas, is a dream of mine. I would love nothing more than to just create and be.

That’s why a summer in Italy at MADE Institute is perfect for all creatives who love the sea. Sicily’s mediterranean waters are the most lovely blue, and it’s even better that the institute overlooks the ocean. Opening in 1995, MADE is special because it uses the entire island of Sicily as its classroom. As artists know, it is so important to draw and be inspired from real life, MADE prioritizes combining both design and intimate histories of the local culture. One key idea that I love about MADE is the importance of “I am,” “You are,” and “We are.” While this mission is more deeply explored in longer programs, it is still touched upon in the summer sessions. To be a great artist, you need to discover yourself and what you want to express. Only then are you and your art able to engage with others and the greater community.

In addition, many students have the opportunity to learn directly from creatives who are processionals, small business owners, NGO (non profit government organization) leaders, and designers. Having this type of support is invaluable because many creatives hear that they’ll never get anywhere with art as a career. But, with a mentor, that can change–it shows young artists that they can succeed with hard work.

Other activities on the island include workshops, events, swimming, boating, and more. You’re sure to find your creative flow with such an amazing program.

SAI’s affiliation with MADE Institute offers students two summer programs: Summer 5 Weeks I and Summer 6 Weeks II. Both courses start with a one week Survival Italian Language Course perfect for first time learners or those who need to brush up on their skills.

Summer 5 Weeks I is a good choice for students who want to delve into Sicilian history by exploring the landscape, local museums, and cultural settings such as open air markets.

Summer 6 Weeks II offers students a wonderful one-week intensive Art & Design workshop known as a MADE Lab. This final week in Sicily allows students to really refine their craft. This program is structured for artists, designers, and architects who really want to explore new developments within their fields. If this article resonated with you, Summer 6 Weeks II would be a great choice for you.

Syracuse is a destination just waiting to be explored!
