Gearing up for the journey of studying abroad is exciting and nerve wrecking – have you packed? Did you forget anything? Are you ready to embark on the most amazing journey of your life? As someone who’s been in your shoes, I understand that battling homesickness can be one of the toughest challenges you’ll face. I’m here to share some strategies to help you navigate those homesick blues. Firstly, remind yourself why you embarked on this journey. Studying abroad isn’t just about academics; it’s about growth, exploration, and embracing new experiences. Embrace every moment, even the ones filled with homesickness, as part of your adventure. It isn’t easy, but you will come out of this experience as a stronger individual. Establishing a routine can provide stability amidst the whirlwind of change. Whether it’s scheduling regular calls home, or exploring your new city, having a sense of structure can make your days feel more manageable. The best thing that worked for me was attending fitness classes, joining the Global Leadership program and having trips planned with friends.
Through the struggles of being alone and finding yourself homesick, lean on your friends that are with you. Making new friends who share your experiences can provide a sense of support. These friends will soon become family which leads to Europe feeling more and more like home! The community I developed in Florence are now some of my very best friends. We have memories together that no one will ever be able to relate to. From dog sledding in Norway to paragliding in Switzerland, these people have pushed me to my greatest ability and encouraged me every step of the way.
Explore your surroundings. Immerse yourself in the culture, cuisine, and customs of your host country. The more you venture out and explore, the more you’ll feel at home in your new environment. I challenge you to learn the language and say yes to all new adventures. Studying abroad is almost like a fresh start where you get to decide who you want to be for the next 4 months. Through all the struggles that are never spoken about, there is also so much beauty in this adventure.
Lastly, don’t forget to prioritize self-care. Take time for yourself, indulge in activities that bring you joy, and be gentle with yourself during moments of homesickness. Be selfish, you worked so hard to get here, take advantage of that and be proud of yourself! Homesickness is just a temporary bump on the road of your study abroad journey. With time, patience, and a positive attitude, you’ll find yourself settling into your new home away from home. I was in your shoes and now I never want to leave Florence! So, embrace the adventure, cherish the memories, and above all, enjoy every moment of this incredible experience. I wish you the best of luck!
