Navigating Train Stations in Italy

The United States public transport systems are much less efficient, so we rely much more heavily on driving and flying between locations. This not only poses huge environmental implications such as greenhouse gas emissions but also limits American’s ability to access different regions of the country. When I decided to move to Europe, I was excited to be able to access so many places using European travel systems. However, coming from the United States and navigating public transportation through Europe was quite daunting at first. Through my travels, I have learned a multitude of public transportation lessons that may help you on your travels during your upcoming study abroad trip!

In Florence, using the bus to travel around the city center or using the tram to get to the airport, you can buy tickets at a Tabacchi, the train station kiosks or online via the atBus app. Remember to authenticate these tickets either online or on the bus/tram using the ticket machine!

When planning your trips, make sure to check the public transport system to and from the airport to the train station, and buy your tickets accordingly. In Florence, the main train station is located downtown at Santa Maria Novella. It’s good to familiarize yourself with the train and navigate the station because you’ll likely travel out of there or the tram right outside to get anywhere you wanna go. In other cities, there are multiple train stations which can make it slightly confusing when booking trips. Many students travel out of Milan because the flights are cheaper than in Florence. However Milan is massive, so when booking your trips, try to make sure the train is arriving at the same airport you are flying in/out of.

Overall, if you are ever confused, don’t be afraid to ask for help! There are so many people traveling in Europe, locals and travelers alike are so kind and understanding – and it’ll make your travels so much easier!

These photos are of the bus/tram tickets in Florence. The first photo is the front side and the second is the back side. At the top on the back side is the authentication – showing the date and time that it was stamped for authentication.
