Preparing for Worldwide Travel!

This opportunity to study abroad was an amazing blessing I was able to receive, and since I have never been out of the USA before, this opportunity was very daunting for me. I was doing as much research as I could to prepare myself, but I still did not feel ready. I am very particular about making sure everything is in line before I do something, so this was stressful thinking about all I would need to do. However, after being here for a few weeks and settling in, I feel confident and comfortable being in a new city, country, and culture! That may be how you are feeling right now, apprehensive and nervous, but let me assure you there are many ways to prepare. Here are some tips I recommend to fully adjust to life in a new continent!

I would recommend making a packing list when packing and laying everything out in front of you so you know exactly what you’re bringing. This helped me a lot because I was also able to pick out the least amount of clothing that would have the most amount of versatility. I was able to make a long list and check everything off once I bought it and laid it out. This was super helpful with packing as well.

One essential I would also recommend bringing is a journal to write down all of your experiences, including your feelings, that you can read back and look at, and share with your future kids and family members! I also have been taping receipts in there to help me remember where I went.

I was super nervous to be away from home, from friends and family, but I think chatting with others who have already had abroad experiences really helped to soothe my nerves. I would recommend reaching out to other peers you know who have done this type of adventure, because it reminded me that I was going to have so much fun!

I also think bringing some mementos that remind you of your family can really help ease the worries! I would suggest bringing some printed out photos, maybe a small memento like a tiny stuffed animal, or just something that comforts you and reminds you of home.
Another thing I would suggest is writing letters! That may help to ease some of the stress or worry. Otherwise, budget out some time to call or FaceTime your family so you can chat. It has been nice being able to catch up with them even when I am halfway across the world.

Once you’re there, I would recommend resting and relaxing, but also, if you’re up for it, go explore! Take a walk around the city you’re living in, and check out new places. It’s going to feel weird at first, so the more you walk and get to know certain buildings and locations, the easier it will be for you to fall into a routine and not feel super stressed. Routines definitely to help me stay calm and focused, and feel more adjusted to the new world around me.
Overall, I have greatly enjoyed my time abroad so far, and I look forward to continuing it! Try to just breathe, relax, and know that the memories you will make will last a lifetime. Plus, funny stories are always memorable stories you can share with everyone you love when you head back!
