New Discoveries
Eric, Florence, Spring 2013

I’ve now been in Florence exactly one month and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. Every day that I’m in this beautiful city I grow to love it more and more. Each day brings a new discovery, whether it be a new favorite gelato place or a relaxing piazza, Florence is full of hidden treasures.

Speaking of which, I recently went on SAI’s hidden treasures of Italy 3-day excursion. It was a wonderful experience and a great opportunity to see the beauty of the Tuscan countryside. So many beautiful sites: the winery at Montepulciano, the cathedral and underground caves in Orvieto, and the rolling hillsides on the way to Sorreno. It was a great way to start out my Italian study abroad experience.

As far as international traveling is concerned, I have yet to venture outside of Italy. Though I have trips planned to London and Stockholm, I love spending time exploring Italy. Piazza Santa Croce is a particular favorite of mine for relaxation and unwinding. On Saturdays and Sundays traditional Italian music can be heard from the piazza as talented musicians play their upright bass, classic guitar, and violin in perfect harmony. When I’m not relaxing in the piazzas, I love stopping by Pino’s, my favorite Panini place. Pino is probably the nicest, most genuine sandwich maker in all of Florence. He loves conversing with students and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Every day walking back from class I see him waving at me from across the street.

My time here has been an absolute blast. As I get closer to midterms and spring break, I have no doubt that many enriching experiences are still yet to come.
