Prior to studying abroad, I had never been to Rome, or anywhere else in Europe. The fact that I traveled to a completely different, beautiful place didn’t really kick in until the transport to my apartment. The first thing I noticed was the healthy-looking, green plant life. Coming from -40°F weather in Minnesota, I was not used to things actually being able to live outside.
The next thing I noticed was that Rome was exactly how I imagined it, and better. Everything in the movies was right; the buildings had vines growing up to the balconies, the streets were cobblestone, and there were pizzerias on every street corner. As I got closer to my apartment I was able to see the view of the city, it was spectacular. With this greatness also came intimidation. Rome was over 30 times larger than any city I’ve lived in. I would have to adjust.
I was delighted as I got dropped off in front of my new home. My apartment building looked very traditional and my street smelled of pizza. Once I got into my apartment I met 2 of my roommates and they showed me around. Our apartment was absolutely adorable! It has 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and a huge living area/kitchen. I was beyond excited that my room had a large closet and a desk for studying. Later that night I met my roommate who I’d actually be sharing a room with. It wasn’t until the next night that I met the remaining 2 roommates. All of us immediately hit it off and I knew we would become good friends.
The next couple of days were filled with exploration in the company of my roommates. With every adventure came astonishment and confusion. In fact, we got lost in nearly all of our adventures. Nonetheless, we had a great time! We also had SAI orientation throughout our first couple of days in Rome. We learned much-needed safety and navigation tips. My roommates and I also participated in a walking tour where we got to see the Trevi Fountain, the Altare della Patria, and many other chapels, fountains, and monuments.
My favorite activity during orientation week was visiting Ostia Antica, which was a free trip provided by SAI. Ostia Antica had beautiful ancient ruins and I enjoyed learning the history of Rome. We also had the privilege of going to the Roman countryside to have an extravagant lunch.
My first week in Rome was astounding, and I’m thrilled to be in Italy for the next four months!
