One of the most transformative experiences in a student’s life could be studying abroad, offering an endless amount of rewarding outcomes. Studying Abroad is a privilege that shouldn’t be taken for granted, if you can attend, please do! It will be an experience you will not regret. Every student’s experience is different, therefore, I would suggest those interested in studying abroad try their best to prepare themselves, mentally and emotionally. Studying abroad has invoked many emotions over the past five weeks. I’ve resided alone. Excitement, homesickness, curiosity, cultural shock, and pride have been a few emotions I have experienced from the moment I stepped off my 16-hour flight to Florence, Italy.

Living in a new environment has encouraged me to be more self-aware and reflect on my values and identity. I traveled alone, not knowing anyone and barely the Italian language. Fear but excitement ran through my body the first few days in Florence. However, my parents encouraged me to put myself out there, make friends, and explore Italian culture. While examining Italian culture, I’ve expanded my appreciation and understanding of a new culture and broadened my worldview. The exposure I endured to international perspectives enriched my thinking, and empathy, and prepared me for the world.

Exposure to different educational systems will improve your academic knowledge and skills. My class provided me with educational and professional tips for my future career. As a writer, these classes were crucial for my future so I ensured myself to get the most out of them. Access to more career opportunities is a huge factor in studying abroad. During my “Magainzie, Editing, and Publishing” class, our professor took us on a trip to visit a publishing company in Florence. We met a wide range of people in different departments and had a chance to introduce ourselves. This was a great opportunity to put our foot in the door and express our desires for our future careers. Networking is a huge factor because meeting the right people can open doors to new opportunities you’ve thought you’d never have.

The most rewarding outcome of studying abroad is profound personal growth. It helped enhance my academic and professional skills. There are pros and cons to studying abroad, however, I’m beyond grateful to be able to have this experience. Although all of my plans were not executed the way I expected, I kept pushing and remained positive. Having a positive mindset during my study abroad trip helped remove the negative emotions I sometimes faced. Now, I am leaving Florence feeling empowered with new friends, a better aspect of life, and more confidence to succeed academically and professionally.
