Every 25 years, The Catholic Church in Italy holds a “Jubilee” year, drawing millions to Rome.
So, what is the Jubilee?
The Jubilee is a year marked every 25 years in the Catholic Church known as a “Holy Year”. The Catholic Church uses this time to canonize new saints (for example, the Blessed Carlo Acutis will be canonized a saint on April 27th), Pilgrimages to the Holy Doors, concerts, specific art exhibitions, and many more events held for Catholics who wish to attend.

Most events are happening in Vatican City, but that doesn’t mean Rome won’t be busy. With the estimated 32 million people expected to visit Rome & Vatican City during the year, it will make for a very busy and exciting year around Rome.
Here’s some advice from our SAI Staff on how to navigate Rome while it’s busy this year!
Take Day Trips outside of the city
1. Tivoli
2. Castel Gandolfo and Nemi
3. Frascati
4. Ostia Antica
Luckily for our SAI Rome students, these day trips are all VIVA Experiences and included in the program!
Go with the Flow
1. Explore the neighborhoods of Ositense and Monti, especially in the evening for an aperitivo. These are both known for having an alternative vibe, Monti is full of vintage and thrift stores and Ostiense has graffiti and street art.
2. Visit Appia Antica for a hike along Unesco World Heritage Center and visit the Roman catacombs!
