The Aventine Keyhole: harnessing a stunning view of St. Peter’s Basilica!

If I had a singular word to describe this experience, it would be “fulfilling.” It is a powerful word because it explains every aspect of the study abroad experience: the travel, the sightseeing, the amazing people you’ll meet, and the staff who take care of you. You can feel the love, empathy, and care the staff give you throughout your entire stay. Not only do you feel seen in the comforts of your city abroad, but while traveling, you are blessed with similar treatment. It is truly something special when you befriend so many people in similar boats and go on adventures to places you never thought you would ever see. I believe the most fulfilling part, however, is the lessons and growth you attain from venturing around your new home.

A stunning view of St. Peter’s Basilica!

Traveling alone (like I did) was a scary thing in the beginning. However, those feelings are inevitably blinded by the beauty that surrounds you. It gave me a newfound sense of determination to explore and expand myself, and it was so fulfilling. It was fulfilling to ask an Italian for directions when I was confused and did not speak the language. It was fulfilling to ride my first train and navigate the confusion of an outside city. It was fulfilling to utilize the mistakes of taking a wrong turn on a street, or saying the wrong word in Italian to a local, and even misinterpreting the cultural norms. Working with volunteering opportunities through my university in Rome has aided me so much in giving back and strengthening my passion for assisting others.

All of these lessons taught me to understand others in a light that was outside my comfort zone of the United States, and mistakes are what lead us to successful lives. This program also taught me resilience and pushing the limits of what I am capable of achieving, not only on a scholarly level, but on a personal level. Overall, my time in Rome has demonstrated to me that I have the power to persevere through hardships, face my fears, understand new cultures, spread kindness, and live a successful, fulfilling life.
